Our Problems with Labor Unions
Article Focus: union prevention
Article by Dominic Graziano
I do not profess to be an expert on the economy, the unemployment rate or labor reform. But what I am about to say about Labor Unions just seems like common sense.
Labor Unions are great for people who are in that union, but they [see also 'employers rights' ] don't mean squat to the general public. The guy sitting at home filling out job applications is not going to stand a better chance of getting a job because of the union. In fact, I would say that thee are less jobs available to him because of the unions.
Let me put it this way. Unions prevent expansion. When a company moves into a new area, they [see also 'employers rights' ] are taking a risk The company may not be successful in that area, and it may lose money. So, the company is apt not to expand Why risk taking on new workers, when they [see also 'employers rights' ] may have [see also 'wage and hour law' ] to pay large settlements if the expansion fails?
Here's another scenario. Let's say this company absolutely needs to expand. Perhaps they [see also 'employers rights' ] need more workers in their call center. Well, instead of opening a call center in the US, they [see also 'employers rights' ] are outsourcing these jobs to different countries. Part of this is because these other countries provide cheap labor. But another reason is because the lack of a labor union (or not as strong of a labor union) makes outsourcing much more reasonable. If the call center fails, they [see also 'employers rights' ] may pay their outsourced employees a severance package - but this would probably not even come close to what they [see also 'employers rights' ] would have [see also 'wage and hour law' ] to pay an American worker. Simply put, labor unions cause our jobs to be outsourced.
Speaking of cheap labor, many American companies will hire illegal immigrants at extremely low wages instead of salaried American employees. Again, this is in part due to the labor unions. Why would you hire a union employee when you can hire someone else at a much lower wage. Heck, even if you get caught and have [see also 'wage and hour law' ] to pay a fine, it's still probably less of a hassle than any union would make you endure.
We have [see also 'wage and hour law' ] a very real unemployment issue in the United States. Labor Unions are not the solution to this problem - if anything, they [see also 'employers rights' ] are part of the problem.
What we need is a new labor reform initiated by our government. These kind of things should not be left up to unions. Our government should tax companies who unnecessarily outsource jobs. Our government should take action to prevent illegal immigrants from taking American jobs.
Honestly, if outsourcing was eliminated - and if illegal immigrant employment were eliminated - the unemployment crisis would be solved.
Americans need to boycott companies that outsource jobs. Americans need to call for labor reforms. I'm sorry, but Labor Unions are not the answer.
